Artist: JENX
Album: Unusual
Year: 2005

When it comes to France, people in Holland usually think only about wine and cheese. To be honest, I did as well some years ago, but in these times France is known to me as a country with many promising and talented acts. Bands like Anorexia Nervosa, Scarve and Arkhon Infaustus still make my day with every album and when it comes to industrial we shouldn’t complain as well. If you surf through this website you will find reviews of Division Alpha, Zuul FX and Malmonde (to name a few) with ease and read about their talents. And from today, we can add Jenx to the list of French bands reviews. Their press-kit has been recieved, including their “Unusual” promo. Since the press-kit is in French and my French is not that good (most part of the press kit are reviews anyway), I decided to have a look on their site. But yep, in French as well. A quick look on the concert section shows me that this band already have performed with Gorgasm (I think it is the French one, which is currently known as Gorod – whatever, both the Gorgasms are death metal anyways) so I prepared myself for some blasting industrial death metal stuff.

And my suspicions were confirmed from the first snaredrum hit. ‘Demonhead’ is a song that unleashes a lot of power out of the stereo from the start until the end. Some blasting industrial death metal with strong HC influences is the best way to describe this song. Little touches of Machine Head and Slipknot here and there, and you will get the idea. If you were asleep, this song should definitely have waken you up! ‘Remember’ is a more technical song compared to the one before, but still build with the industrial death/HC concept. There are some really catchy guitar riffs hidden here and there, and I think the vocals (think of a mix of Yacoepsae and E.N.T.) are on its best in a song like this. A song to remember, or like the song quotes: “I will remember you even if I am far away!” ‘Unusual’ is the title track of the promo. It has a one minute instrumental intro, which is maybe a little bit too much, but afterwards another good song follows. It is pretty contradictive with the powerful opening track, but it shows some cool other side of Jenx. This is what we can call a song with a soul. Slow, dark, though with strenght. ‘Compromised’ is I think the best word to describe the song itself. The song sounds to me as a mix, a compromise, of the three preverious songs of the record. With, a little more touch of industrial. The guitars even remind me to a band like Antigama here and there, which is a pretty strange comparation! It is a shame that after 4 tracks and 16 minutes this promo already ends, because I really would like to hear more of them. Curious? Check out www.myspace.com/jenxnoise to listen and download track 1 and 3! For fans of bands like Fear Factory, Zuul FX, Dagoba and various HC bands. In one word: impressive!
