Artist: DAGOBA
Album: What Hell Is About
Year: 2006

The virus spread by Fear Factory has victims all over Europe, but France looks like the worst part. Bands like Zuul FX and Malmonde already conquered many souls all over Europe with their industrial death metal, and now major label Seasons of Mist signed one of the leading bands from France in this genre: Dagoba. After the release of their self titled debut album they became wellknown all over Europe as result of both the tours with Fear Factory and Samael, and after the release of ‘What Hell Is About’ they went on tour with In Flames and Sepultura too. ‘What Hell Is About’ has been released on February 20th 2006, and special guest on this album is Simen Hestness, better known as ICS Vortex (Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus, ex-Borknagar) who has done some clean vocal parts on two of the tracks.

The new album is, compared with their self titled debut, more mature. They deliver modern industrial death metal with a bit of the hardcore and metalcore touch, and even some symphonic parts here and there. All the songs are decently build, and with the diversity of the vocals Dagoba has definitely found an own style. ‘Die Tomorrow (...What If You Should?)’ is a killer opener with a little metalcore touch here and there, while ‘The Fall of Men’ is more heavy sounding for example. There are a few tracks I would like to have a special word on. First, ‘The Man You're Not’. This is a song that has reached a level of power that Fear Factory never managed to create, which is damn sure a compliment. Pre-chorusses are accompanied by keys, and the chorus is catchy as Hell. Definitely one of the best songs of the record, specially the intermezzo with the keys and the machinery music is outstanding. ‘Morphine -The Apostle of Your Last War’ is even more brutal, as I consider it as the most brutal track of the record. Extreme guitarwork and killer double bass bashing are hearable all over the song, and mixed with the modern industrial death metal vocals gives this song nothing to complain about. I put it to you that no true industrial death metal fan will dislike this song! ‘It's All About Time’ is, together with ‘The White Guy (Suicide)’, the track with the guest vocalist in action. It’s the longest track of the record, and built decently as usual. There is not much to say about this song, except the guest vocals of Vortex. In my opinion, they sound a little weird and misplaced on an industrial death metal fact, underlined by the fact that Dagoba’s vocalist is able to do great clean vocals as well. Don’t get me wrong, Vortex is an awesome vocalist, but I just don’t think that his vocals really fit on music like this. Although, its accompanied beautifully by the atmospheric keys.

In the end, I dare to say that Seasons of Mist signed another killer industrial band after Aborym and Kill The Thrill, and with this release Dagoba proves that they are not a one day fly. Now just wait until the time the machines will take over the world, because the soundtrack has been made already.
