Artist: CRACK OV DAWN
Album: White Line
Year: 2006
Not many people outside of France must have heard of
Crack ov Dawn when they released their debut album “Dawn
Addict” some years ago. But since this debut album
turned out to be a cool and positive surprise according
to various press and public, Crack ov Dawn isn’t an
unknown name in the scene anymore, and the next album
has been released upon mankind again before we actually
knew it! “White Line” is released in 2006 on Equilibre
Music, which is known for the release of the Crack ov
Dawn debut album and the release of various other
interesting albums, like the latest releases of MXD and
Zuul FX.
First impression? A good one! On “White Line”, Crack ov
Dawn chose for a more heavy guitar sound in stead of the
softer, sometimes even poppy guitar sound on “Dawn
Addict”. The vocals are more ‘demanding’ than before,
and these things combined together give this album a
more mature sounding already. This fact is underlined by
the actual songs. The songs are more decently built than
before, and they made the samples fit the songs better
too. Let’s drag a few songs under the microscope. ‘Love
Injection’ is one of the best songs of this album in my
opinion. The AC/DC sounding guitarriffs in the beginning
are quite unexpecting, but the heavy bassline soon takes
over and commands the guitars to follow. The drumwork (a
bit d-beat likely but less fast) and a catchy chorus
make this song one that keeps stuck in your head for
some time. And, when after some time the AC/DC likely
guitarriffs return for a while, they sound not too weird
in this track either! ‘Bastard City’ is one of the more
heavy tracks of the album. This song proves that Crack
ov Dawn must have some punk influences hidden in their
hearts, as this song can be described as a cyber punk
track. Agreed, it’s less fast than Dope Stars Inc. and
less extreme than Punish Yourself, but some genres are
quite wide, right? This track is even a little danceable
from time to time, and the closer you get to the end of
this track, the more you get the urge to scream the
chorus together with these guys! The final song I want
to have some words said about is called ‘Take The Pain’.
Its one of the more emotional songs, with cold and
atmospheric sampling and pounding guitarparts. The
sampling on this song could fit in different EBM songs
easely, and the eccentric vocals of Crack ov Dawn gives
a song like this something extra you can’t really
describe.
In the end, “White Line” turned out to be a really
worthy follow-up of Crack ov Dawn’s debut album, and
people who like that debut will definitely agree with
this rating. And if you still haven’t heard of these
lipstick dandies after this record, you should be
ashamed of yourself!
